Malta Enterprise, together with Transport Malta and Aġenzija Żgħażagħ, launched a student-focused initiative during this year’s Startup Festival Malta, now in its fifth edition. As part of the festival’s growing student programme, Transport Malta delivered a mobility hackathon designed to inspire young entrepreneurs and highlight new business opportunities within the transport sector.

Over 200 students from seven public and private schools took part in this year’s student programme. 85 students took part in the Hackathon challenge proposing futuristic and sustainable mobility solutions aligned with Malta’s Vision 2050. Working within a scenario where no cars could be used from Monday to Friday, students presented creative ideas that blended technology, sustainability, and community connectivity. Aġenzija Żgħażagħ facilitated this process through a creative, parallel-thinking approach, encouraging innovative solutions and collaborative problem-solving among participants.
Running in parallel to the hackathon, Aġenzija Żgħażagħ designed and delivered a dedicated ‘Right to Disconnect’ session, where students participated in activities designed to stimulate the brain and activate beneficial neurochemicals, encouraging students to reflect on healthy boundaries, digital balance, and well-being - key themes for the future workforce.
St. Ignatius College Ħandaq Secondary School won the hackathon, with San Gorg Preca College Secondary School and Knights College placing as runners-up.
This initiative reflects Malta Enterprise’s commitment to nurturing entrepreneurial qualities among young people and fostering innovation across all sectors. Transport Malta’s involvement supports its broader mission to build knowledge hubs and promote skills development within the evolving transport ecosystem. Aġenzija Żgħażagħ’s contribution continues to create opportunities for young people to strengthen human development skills and prepare for future challenges.
The student programme is an ongoing effort to provide students with opportunities and innovation-driven learning experiences that empower the next generation of thinkers and creators.
Malta Enterprise, Transport Malta and Aġenzija Żgħażagħ congratulate all students who took part in this initiative and encourage schools to reach out to participate in future events by sending an email to students@startinmalta.com
